Edward Bawden At Home
Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903–1989) was a British painter, illustrator and graphic artist, who trained under Paul Nash in the 1920s. His first solo exhibition was in 1933.
During the Second World War, he served as one of Britain’s Official War Artists, making many evocative watercolours that recorded the war effort in Europe and the Middle East.
With a well-established reputation across illustration, printmaking and painting, he also turned his hand to posters, ceramics and wallpapers, blurring the boundary between fine and applied arts.
We have reissued four of his wallpaper designs, Pigeon and Clock Tower, Sahara, Seaweed and Tree and Cow, each in its original 1927 colourway and printed in the UK.

In 2018, our sister company St Jude’s Prints published Edward Bawden At Home: A Working Life. This richly illustrated hardback, with essays by Iris Weaver, Richard Bawden, Peyton Skipwith and Christopher Brown, includes a series of photographs of the Bawdens’ Saffron Walden home, taken shortly after the artist’s death in 1989 by photographer Roy Hammans, alongside a selection of prints, watercolours and posters.
You can register your interest in a second edition of the book, but in the meantime, here is a selection of the images taken by Roy Hammans.

“In 1989, I was fortunate to be asked by Olive Cook, a close friend of Bawden, to record the interior of the artist Edward Bawden’s house in Saffron Walden, Essex, shortly after his death.
I spent the best part of a sunny December day there, lighting and recording an interior which featured much of his work and that of his late wife, the potter Charlotte Epton, as well as prints and artefacts by many other famous artists.”
